I Think Mrs Jenkins’ Baking Has a Hidden Ingredient

I’m sitting in the living room, staring at Pandora as she scrolls through her phone, and I notice something weird.

She’s been on that same page for like five minutes now, but every time I glance over, it looks like she’s just started reading again from scratch.

It’s not like she’s deeply engaged or anything – just kind of zoning out.

John Mercer’s in his room, working on some project, and I can hear the occasional thud of a book hitting the desk.

Mrs Jenkins is baking something in the kitchen that smells amazing, but also kinda…

odd? Like, it’s sweet and all, but there’s this weird undertone to it that I don’t recognize.

And Mr Whiskers is sleeping on my lap, which is nice, I guess.

But honestly, my mind keeps drifting back to Pandora and her phone.

What’s going on with her? I’m trying to piece together what’s going on, but it’s like trying to solve a puzzle blindfolded.

I look at Pandora again, and this time I notice that she’s got her head cocked to one side, almost as if she’s listening for something.

But there’s no sound coming from the phone – just the occasional vibration or beep when someone texts her.

Maybe it’s not about the content of the page itself, but rather…

oh wait, maybe she’s looking at pictures and is zoning out because they’re boring? No, that doesn’t feel right either.

I glance over at John Mercer’s room again, and now I’m thinking about how he always seems to be working on some big project, but what if it’s not just a project – what if he’s secretly building something in there that’s affecting the whole house? Like, maybe he’s got some kind of weird experiment going on with Mrs Jenkins’ baking that’s causing the smell to be off.

I look at Mr Whiskers and wonder if cats can even sense these kinds of things…

Wait, maybe I’m overthinking this whole thing.

Maybe Pandora’s just not as into her phone as she used to be, and that’s it.

It’s not like she’s avoiding me or anything, right? But then why did Karen mention the other day that Pandora’s been acting weird around her too? Hmm, no, that’s not it – I’m sure Karen was just being nosy.

Unless…

unless Pandora is actually talking to someone on her phone and I’ve just been misinterpreting all this time? No way, she’d tell me if she was on a call or something.

But what about when I saw her quickly hide the screen from me last night? Maybe it’s not a conversation at all – maybe she’s just looking up something private…

or checking some kind of online account without wanting to show me.

Ugh, why do I even care this much? I’m starting to think about all the times Pandora’s phone has been vibrating or beeping, and how she’s always quickly silenced it or put it away when I walk into the room.

It’s like she’s hiding something from me, but what if it’s not even a secret conversation? What if it’s just that she’s getting a lot of annoying spam texts and doesn’t want to deal with them in front of me? That makes more sense, right? But then again, I’ve seen her smile at her screen before when she thinks no one is looking – a small, private smile that disappears the moment she realizes I’m watching.

Maybe it’s not even about what’s on her phone, but how she’s reacting to whatever it is…

like she’s guilty of something or trying to hide a joke from me.

Now I’m wondering if maybe John Mercer has noticed this too, and we’ve just been talking past each other when we discuss the weird vibes in the house.

Wait a minute, maybe it’s not even about Pandora or her phone.

What if it’s about me? I mean, think about how weird I’ve been lately – always questioning everything and getting worked up over nothing.

Maybe I’m the one creating this tension, not Pandora at all.

But no, that can’t be it…

unless…

unless my behavior is actually mirroring something else going on in the household that has nothing to do with me or Pandora.

Like maybe John Mercer’s been stressing about something and it’s rubbing off on me? That could make sense – we’ve been roommates for a while now, after all.

I remember he mentioned being behind on some bills last week…

no, that can’t be it either, he’d have told me if there was a problem like that.

Unless…

unless he’s been keeping something from me too? Now I’m getting to the root of it – I think Mr Whiskers is somehow involved in this whole thing.

I mean, that cat has been acting strange lately too, always lurking around Pandora when she’s on her phone and meowing at her like he wants something.

At first, I thought maybe he just wanted attention or food, but what if it’s more than that? What if Mr Whiskers is somehow sensing that there’s tension in the air and is trying to mediate it by getting close to Pandora? That would explain why she always seems so hesitant around him when I’m watching – she doesn’t want me to think they’re colluding or something.

And Mrs Jenkins, our neighbor, was just mentioning how Mr Whiskers has been meowing loudly at her house too, like he’s trying to communicate with someone…

maybe even John Mercer? This is getting crazy, but what if I’m onto something here? What if there’s a whole web of subtext and secret communication going on right under my nose? I’m starting to think that Karen, Dave’s wife from next door, might be a key player in this whole thing.

I mean, she’s always chatting with Pandora about something, but what if it’s not just small talk? What if they’re exchanging information or even coordinating some kind of plan without me knowing? And Dave himself, he’s always lurking around the backyard when I’m trying to have conversations with Pandora, like he’s intentionally eavesdropping.

It’s all very suspicious, and it’s making me wonder if there’s a bigger social dynamic at play here that I’m not aware of.

Maybe even something as simple as Mrs Jenkins’ gardening society is more involved than I thought – what if they’re using their gatherings as cover for clandestine meetings or something? My mind is racing with all the possibilities, and I need to dig deeper to figure out what’s really going on.

I’m convinced that Mr Whiskers is the linchpin here, and his constant meowing at Mrs Jenkins’ house is a clever ruse to gather intel.

I’ve been watching, and it’s almost as if he’s trying to create a diversion while John Mercer sneaks around, whispering something to her through the fence.

But what if Mr Whiskers isn’t just a feline accomplice? What if he’s actually a highly skilled operative, trained by some clandestine organization to infiltrate our suburban lives and gather information for their nefarious purposes? I mean, have you seen how easily he slips out of the house when no one’s looking? It’s almost as if he has a network of hidden tunnels and passageways at his disposal.

And what about Pandora’s constant reassurances that Mr Whiskers is just “a cat”? Ha! She’s in on it too, isn’t she? I’ve been paying closer attention to Karen’s behavior around Mrs Jenkins’ house, and I’m starting to suspect that she might be more involved in this alleged “gardening society” than we thought.

She always seems to be lingering around the periphery of their gatherings, almost as if she’s waiting for something or someone to arrive.

And what really caught my attention was when I saw her exchanging a discreet glance with Mrs Jenkins during one of our neighborhood barbecues.

It looked almost like a secret signal, but what could they possibly have in common that would warrant such a exchange? It’s all starting to make me wonder if Karen is somehow connected to Dave, and whether the two of them are working together to…

wait, it’s not just about the garden club anymore; I’m starting to think there’s something much bigger at play here.
