I Think Dave’s Secretly Using Our Coffee

I’m in my kitchen, making breakfast.

I notice the coffee beans are almost empty, but I could swear we had a fresh bag just yesterday.

I think John Mercer might have used them for his French press thingy.

But he’s always been weird about that stuff, so maybe it was Pandora who…

no, she’d remember to refill it, right? Unless she’s stressed out again, but I haven’t seen her around this morning.

Speaking of which, where is Mrs Jenkins from next door? She usually comes by for a cup of coffee on Wednesdays.

Her husband always complains about the noise we make in the evenings, but they’re really nice people…

most of the time.

Wait, what’s that sound coming from the living room? Sounds like Mr Whiskers meowing loudly, but it’s not his usual pitch.

Is he trying to get my attention for something? I’ll go check on him after I finish making pancakes.

It’s gotta be Dave who used up the coffee beans.

He’s always dropping by unannounced, and I know he loves a good cup of joe to go with his…

whatever it is he does on those Sundays he spends at our place.

Maybe he was here last night, and I just didn’t notice? That’d explain why Pandora hasn’t mentioned anything about refilling the bag – she might’ve thought Dave had done it.

But wait, if Dave was here, wouldn’t Mrs Jenkins have said something to me this morning? She’s always keeping an ear out for our comings and goings, especially when her husband is being a grump again.

Unless…

unless she wasn’t at home last night either, which would mean someone else was making noise that we didn’t hear – like, maybe Dave had some friends over and they were partying without me knowing? I don’t remember hearing anything unusual, though; the sound in the living room is still bugging me.

What if Dave didn’t just drop by, but he actually stayed over? That’d explain why Pandora hasn’t mentioned anything about refilling the coffee beans.

But then again, wouldn’t she have said something to me this morning when I was making pancakes? Unless…

unless she’s trying to avoid talking to me about it because of some issue we haven’t discussed yet.

Or maybe Dave and Pandora had a disagreement last night, and she’s not bringing it up in front of me.

That’d explain why Mr Whiskers is acting strange too – he senses tension in the air when I’m not around.

It’s possible John Mercer knows something about what happened last night, but he’s not saying anything because…

well, I don’t know why he wouldn’t tell me, but maybe Karen had a role in whatever went down.

She and Dave are friends after all, so it’s possible they were both involved in some kind of secret gathering that I’m not aware of.

If Pandora is trying to avoid talking to me about it, maybe she’s not just hiding something from Dave, but also from Karen.

I mean, they’re always together, and Karen has been acting a bit too curious about our household lately – asking John Mercer all these questions about our daily routine, like what time we go to bed and what time we wake up.

She’s just being friendly, right? But now that I think about it, maybe she’s trying to gather information for Pandora.

That’d explain why Karen hasn’t been around as much recently; she’s been getting her intel from Pandora instead of actually showing up here.

This is making me paranoid – what if they’re both in on something together and I’m just oblivious? But wait, if that’s the case, wouldn’t John Mercer have noticed something too? Unless…

unless he’s also in on it, or maybe he’s not as clueless as I think he is.

I’m starting to wonder if Karen’s been using her friendship with Pandora to get inside information about our household, but what if she’s not just doing it for Pandora? Maybe she’s gathering intel on all of us – me, John Mercer, even Mr Whiskers and Mrs Jenkins.

I mean, think about it, every time we’ve talked, Karen’s been asking these seemingly innocuous questions, but now they seem suspicious in hindsight.

What if she’s using this information to…

I don’t know, manipulate Dave somehow? It’d be weird if she was trying to control him or something, but it’s possible she’s just using her influence to get what she wants.

And what does Karen want? Is it something big or is it just something trivial that we’re not aware of? I need to talk to Pandora about this, but I’m not sure I can trust my own judgment right now – am I reading too much into this or is there actually something going on behind the scenes? I’m starting to think that Karen’s questions are just a ruse, but what if they’re also a test? Maybe she’s been observing our behavior, and her questions are designed to elicit specific responses from us.

That would explain why John Mercer seems so oblivious – he might be deliberately playing dumb to see how we react.

I’m getting chills thinking about it, like I’m trapped in some kind of social experiment.

If that’s the case, then Dave is probably an unwitting participant too…

no, wait, I remember now, Dave’s been acting weird around Karen lately, always agreeing with her and laughing at her jokes.

That’s gotta be more than just coincidence – he must know something, or maybe even be working with her.

But why would he do that? Unless…

unless Karen has some kind of leverage over him.

What could she possibly have on Dave that makes him cooperate like this? This is getting weirder by the minute.

I need to think about Karen’s behavior some more – what if she’s not just manipulating Dave, but also using our conversations as a way to gather intel on all of us? Maybe that’s why she always asks about Mr Whiskers and Mrs Jenkins; she’s trying to get information out of us, or maybe even plant seeds in our minds.

I remember now, Karen was the one who brought up Mrs Jenkins’ garden party last week – it seemed innocent at the time, but now I’m not so sure.

And what about John Mercer’s “oblivious” act? Could he be in on it too, playing both sides to see how far she’ll take this? But if Karen is trying to gather intel, that means she must have some kind of plan or goal in mind – and what could that possibly be? Is she working with someone else behind our backs? And what about Pandora’s interactions with Karen – does she know something we don’t, or has she been playing along all along too? I’ve got it now.

Karen’s plan is to turn our whole apartment into a reality TV show, and she’s been manipulating us all along to create this…

this “social experiment” thing.

She’s been feeding us lines, getting us to react in certain ways, and Dave’s been playing along with her because he’s either in on it or has some kind of personal stake in the outcome.

But what about Pandora? I know she seems clueless, but what if she’s actually the mastermind behind this whole thing? What if she’s been manipulating Karen from the start, using her as a pawn to get us all to react in just the right way? That would explain why Pandora’s always been so interested in my conversations with John Mercer – she wants to see how he’ll respond to certain cues.

And what about Mr Whiskers? He’s always been a bit of a scene-stealer, but what if he’s more than that? What if he’s actually…

I don’t know, some kind of feline informant or something? I keep going back to Pandora’s interactions with Mrs.

Jenkins – they seem so innocent, but what if there’s more to it? I’ve been watching them chat, and every time they talk about something mundane like gardening or recipes, I catch a glimpse of something else in her eyes.

It’s almost…

calculating.

And now that I think about it, Pandora has always been the one who “accidentally” invites Mrs.

Jenkins over for dinner when John Mercer is around – what if she’s using those gatherings to gather intel on our conversations? But here’s the thing: if she’s working with Karen, then why would she be trying to get us to react in certain ways? Unless…

unless it’s all just a ruse to throw us off her real intentions.

I’ve been focusing too much on the TV show angle – what if Pandora’s actually after something bigger? Something that involves Mrs.

Jenkins’ garden party and Mr.

Whiskers, who’s always lurking around the periphery of things.

It’s starting to click now…
