I’m making breakfast in the kitchen, and Pandora’s already sitting at the table, typing away on her laptop.
She looks up at me with a slight distraction in her eyes, like she’s not really present.
I’m thinking about how I noticed that Mr Whiskers hasn’t been using his favorite spot on the windowsill to sleep lately.
It’s been a few days now, and I’ve seen him curling up in weird places around the apartment.
I’m trying to remember if we’ve changed anything in the living room or if John Mercer’s been rearranging furniture again without asking us.
Oh, and Karen sent me that text last night about meeting up at the coffee shop, but I forgot to respond yet.
Mrs Jenkins’ cat smell is lingering in our hallway because she came over yesterday for some reason.
Wait, was it Tuesday? Or maybe it was Wednesday…
Yeah, I’m pretty sure we had plans with John Mercer on Wednesday evening, and Karen texted me around that time too…
It’s gotta be the cat smell that’s freaking Mr Whiskers out.
Mrs Jenkins’ cat, I mean – it’s like a residual scent or something that’s really bothering him.
But why now? Was she over here more than usual last week? I think Karen mentioned something about her visiting recently…
Or was it Pandora who said something? No, wait, I remember now – John Mercer said something about Mrs Jenkins coming over to borrow some sugar.
That must be it, the smell’s been building up in our hallway for a few days because of that visit.
Although, if Mr Whiskers is that sensitive to smells, shouldn’t he be reacting more strongly? It’s not like he’s just avoiding his favorite spot or anything – he’s literally changing his sleeping patterns.
Unless…
unless it’s not just the smell.
Maybe John Mercer did something with our furniture again, and Mr Whiskers is getting anxious about it.
I’ll have to ask John when he gets back from wherever he’s off to today.
Wait, what if John Mercer’s been doing more than just rearranging furniture? What if he’s been changing the layout of our entire apartment without telling us? I mean, think about it – we always argue about how cluttered or messy our place is, but maybe that’s not even true.
Maybe he’s been secretly tidying up and putting things away in weird spots to make it look like a mess from the outside.
But why would he do that? And why wouldn’t he tell us if he was making changes? Unless…
unless we’ve gotten so used to arguing with each other about cleaning that John just decided to take matters into his own hands without bothering to discuss it with us.
That’s a pretty paranoid thought, though – I mean, John and I have been roommates for years now, and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t do something like that.
Would he? I’ve got to admit, Pandora’s been acting really strange lately too.
She’s always been a bit of a neat freak, but she’s been on this cleaning spree for weeks now.
I mean, I’m all for having a tidy place, but it’s like she’s trying to scrub away at something specific.
And every time I try to talk to her about it, she just brushes me off and says I’m being paranoid.
But what if she is hiding something? Maybe she’s been going behind my back, making changes to our apartment without telling me.
That would be a huge betrayal of trust – not that John Mercer hasn’t been doing his own thing lately too, but with Pandora it feels different.
She knows how much I value our space and our routines together.
Is it possible she’s trying to erase something? A memory, maybe? Or a smell? Mr Whiskers seems to be reacting to something in the apartment…
I’m starting to feel like I’m losing my mind.
I’ve been trying to make sense of this whole situation, but it’s like Pandora and John are playing some kind of game with me.
And now, Mr Whiskers is acting all weird too – he’s always been a bit skittish around the apartment, but lately, he’s been hissing at certain spots on the floor as if something’s bothering him.
I’ve tried to follow him, see what’s causing it, but he just runs off and hides under the bed.
It’s like…
have we somehow created some kind of negative energy in this place? Is that even possible? Or is it just my imagination running wild because I’m stressed about all these little things adding up.
I need to talk to someone about this, get a different perspective.
But who can I trust? Not Karen – she’s always so…
distant.
I was just talking to John Mercer about this and he seems convinced it’s just a phase with Pandora, that she’ll get bored with cleaning soon.
But I’m not so sure – have you ever noticed how sometimes our brains start to pick up on these tiny patterns and then we’re convinced they mean something? Like, yesterday I was staring at the clock in the kitchen and I could’ve sworn it was ticking slightly louder than usual.
And Mr Whiskers keeps meowing outside Pandora’s cleaning cove in the living room, like he’s trying to warn me or something.
Maybe I’m just reading too much into it, but what if there’s actually a reason why Pandora is scrubbing every inch of this apartment? What if she’s not even aware of it herself, some kind of obsessive-compulsive thing? That would be…
that would be…
I’ve been trying to piece together why Pandora’s been so fixated on cleaning, and I think it might have something to do with Mr Jenkins.
Remember how he was over here a few weeks ago, complaining about Mrs Jenkins’ hoarding habits? Maybe Pandora picked up on some of that guilt by association and is now acting out in her own way.
It’s almost like she’s trying to prove herself as the “better” partner, but at what cost? I’ve noticed she’s been avoiding certain conversations with me too, especially when it comes to our finances – maybe she’s feeling anxious about not being able to keep up appearances or something.
And John Mercer just keeps saying everything is fine, that Pandora’s just stressed out from work, but what if he doesn’t actually know her as well as I do? What if there’s more going on beneath the surface here? I’ve been observing Pandora’s cleaning habits, and I’m starting to suspect that she might be trying to create a sense of order in her life by mirroring Mrs.
Jenkins’ behavior from the other side – instead of hoarding, Pandora’s over-compensating with cleanliness.
It’s almost like she’s trying to prove herself as the opposite of Mrs.
Jenkins, but in doing so, she’s actually creating a different kind of disorder – an obsession with perfection that’s starting to bleed into other areas of our lives.
I mean, have you noticed how Karen always comments on how tidy our apartment is? It’s like Pandora’s trying to live up to some unrealistic expectation of what it means to be a good partner or roommate.
And now that I think about it, even Mr.
Whiskers seems to be reacting to this environment – he’s been getting more and more agitated when he’s around the cleaning cove, like he can sense the tension beneath the surface.
I’ve been paying attention to Pandora’s interactions with Dave, and I’m starting to think she’s trying to use him as a way to validate her own worth.
He’s always giving her compliments on how put-together our lives are, and it seems like she’s feeding off that praise, using it to boost her own ego.
But what really got me was when she started talking about wanting to redecorate the entire apartment with Dave’s help – as if he’s some kind of interior design expert or something.
I mean, come on, we’ve had this furniture for years and it’s fine, but now Pandora’s suddenly fixated on changing everything just because Dave said our living room looks “stifling”.
It’s like she’s trying to prove that she can keep up with the Joneses, even if that means sacrificing her own taste and preferences.
And Mr.
Whiskers’ agitation is getting worse – I swear, he’s sensing the artificiality of it all.
