In Honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day I took the opportunity to go over to the Martin Luther King Jr. Monument. Upon arriving my initial thoughts was that the status is white and there is a couple mountains on both sides that are white with a piece missing where I first walked through to enter the monument area. I thought they could have done more with this monument, however after I walked by the right side of MLK and I read, “OUT OF THE MOUNTAIN OF DESPAIR, A STONE OF HOPE.” Then as I continued around to the front I began to realize the perspective of the artist which carved MLK out of the missing piece of the mountain. MLK was the hope that was taken out of the mountain of despair. When I considered the MLK monument was one of the giants who helped form this nation and the company he is amongst being George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, this is where the experience was most humbling. It was a beautiful day to reflect at what MLK’s contributions were for equal rights in the United States.

Welcome to Tombstone
Welcome to Tombstone, Arizona. During the 1880’s Tombstone was bigger than Los Angeles, California. This bustling town had a lot going on in the old west. There was gambling, prostitutes, cowboys, mining, shootouts, rattlesnakes, and many other ways people could die in the west. Here are some sights you can see around Tombstone.

Memorial Day 2019
Memorial Day is a time to reflect and remember those who are no longer with us, but are not forgotten. This year I went to Tombstone, Arizona to see a bit of American history that is being preserved at Tombstone. One of the most famous gun battles of the old west was the shootout at the O.K. Corral between the Earp’s and the McLaury’s that occurred on the morning of October 26th, 1881. This gun battle left cowboys Tom McLaury, Frank McLaury, and 19 year old Billy Clanton dead where Virgil Earp, Morgan Earp, and Doc Holliday were only injured. Shown in the image is the final resting places of the McLaury’s and Billy Clanton.

Memorial Day

In observance of Memorial Day 2018, I digitally modified a photo that I had taken at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. The United States flag, “Old Glory,” is in color and the graves below are monochrome. I’ve given it much thought to the meaning that I was trying to obtain by this and it could symbolize the price that many have paid to uphold the ideals that we, as American’s, believe in. It could also mean that Old Glory is waving proudly over those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Whatever meaning you find in this image, I hope it sparks a moment where you take the time to remember a friend, a soldier, a loved one, or even a complete stranger who is no longer here because they had what it took to put their life on the line and believed in making the United States of American one of the greatest countries on earth. Freedom comes with one of the heftiest price tags and we take this day to honor those who have paid dearly for the freedoms we enjoy each and every day.

Memorial Day 2017

It takes a special kind of person to raise their hand and swear an oath to uphold the ideals that we believe in. Unfortunately some pay the ultimate price and never make it home. Please take time to remember those who have fallen while serving in line of duty and loved ones that are gone. Honor life by remembering those who are gone.

Only in Israel
With Hanukkah coming up I thought it would be neat to show some things that you will only see in Israel.
More Women fly F-16’s in Israel than drive cars in Saudi Arabia.

Soldiers who bring their kids to work.

Sudoku while swimming in the Dead Sea.

The reason 7-Elevens are never robbed in Israel.

Israel is the only country where army reservists are commanded by officers younger than their own children.

An entire country comes to a halt. On Holocaust Remembrance Day, a siren goes off at 10 AM in Israel in memory of the 6,000,000 Jews who perished in the Holocaust. As the siren wails all activity comes to a halt, including traffic on major highways.

Israel is one of the only countries where the sun sets into the Mediterranean Sea.

A Hasidic family dressed like this.

Supermodels who serve in the military.

No cars on the road for an entire 24 hours (Yom Kippur).

I am a Veteran
I am a veteran. I chose to serve my country, not because it was cool, but because I though it was the right thing to do. I didn’t join to try to be an sort of hero. I just wanted opportunities to travel the world, learn a decent job, and get a college degree. I was willing to make the sacrifices that many other’s weren’t. I raised my right hand and swore an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States against enemies both foreign and domestic. Although I did not retire from the military, I served honorably. I don’t ask to be recognized. I don’t ask for free stuff. I don’t need people to buy me free beer or pat me on the back. I have done what my country has asked of me and I’ve demanded nothing in return. At sporting events when they ask veteran’s to stand to be recognize, I sit quietly and look around at the real heroes. I believe the it is because of other like-minded individuals from all walks of life, different backgrounds, different cultures, different races, and even different sexual preferences, that have swore the same oath that I swore to protect and defend our beloved country is what makes our country great.
Many people don’t understand the sacrifices that veteran’s have made. They have chosen to protect the United States of America, the values that we stand for, and the ideals that we uphold. They travel to distant lands, spend time away from friends and loved ones, and missed many holidays, birthdays, births, graduations, and other important events. Many service members do not get the opportunity to become a veteran as many never make it home.
When veteran’s day comes around I don’t ask for a day off work. I don’t post my photo to get recognition or praise. I just want to shake the hand or acknowledge others who were willing to do the same thing I did. These are the people I like to know. These are the truly great people who make this country what it is. These are the people that are always welcome and have a friend with me. Here’s to you. Cheers.
